Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Inside Straight / Saudade

Description
A little hard bop with room to roam: the Cannonball Adderley Quintet brings a rich jazz tradition into focus on this 1973 Fantasy single, F-706. Its title, “Inside Straight,” sits alongside “Saudade,” a pairing that invites curiosity without giving either name away. Hard bop often balances blues-rooted energy with the freedom of improvisation, while modal jazz opens up space for musicians to explore a smaller set of harmonic changes; jazz-funk adds a supple rhythmic pull to that mix. Adderley is a jazz saxophonist, and this quintet credit places the record firmly in the ensemble tradition, where conversation between players is part of the music’s enduring appeal.
