John Cougar’s 1982 single pairs “Can You Take It” with “Jack & Diane,” placing two memorable titles together at a moment when American rock drew deeply on rootsy, Southern-inflected sounds. Southern rock has always carried a sense of place through its sturdy guitar-led tradition and plainspoken spirit, while leaving room for songs to travel far beyond their starting point. This release offers a concise meeting with that strand of rock, and with Cougar’s early-1980s work under the name John Cougar. Issued in the United States by Riva as R 210, it belongs to a tradition where directness can make a song feel close at hand.
