Robert John - Janet / The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Description
Soul ballads know how to make a small moment feel enormous. On this 1971 single, Robert John brings that tradition into focus with “Janet” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” two titles that sit together without asking for the same kind of attention. The ballad form has long made room for tenderness and direct feeling, while rhythm and blues gives its vocal storytelling a supple, grounded pulse. Issued by Atlantic as 2846, this United States pressing belongs to a period when soul and pop often met in the space between intimacy and broad appeal. The enduring appeal lies in that simple invitation: stay with the voice and the song.
