The Supremes - Nathan Jones / Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)

Description
There’s a bright snap to early-’70s soul: rhythm and feeling move together, with every phrase made to linger. The Supremes bring that spirit to “Nathan Jones,” a title that gives this 1971 Motown single its unmistakable center. Soul grew from gospel’s emotional urgency and rhythm and blues’ forward pull, and that meeting still gives the music its warmth and lift. Turn it over for “Happy (Is A Bumpy Road),” paired here with the A-side on Motown M 1182. The contrast in those titles leaves room for both the road’s bumps and the pleasure of carrying on—an enduring kind of soul wisdom.
